Welcome

  • Poquoson Primary School serves all kindergarten through second grade children in Poquoson. In addition, we have a reversed-mainstream preschool class (IPOP). We provide a balanced approach to literacy with instruction in reading, word study, and writing.  Besides a balanced approach to literacy, we focus instruction in math, science, and social studies too.  Each student will have one encore class per day alternating between art, music, P.E., library, guidance, and computer lab. Of course, recess and lunch are always a favorite! We use "Bucket Filling" to promote a kind, anti-bullying school environment with common expectations for positive behavior.

  • Transportation Information

Students’ transportation routes, stop information, as well as approximate times are available, and we have put this information on to a luggage tag for each student which is to be placed on backpacks for the year. We also have a name lanyard for each student to coordinate with the classroom assignment so we can easily help students find teachers the first few days of school. Name lanyards should be worn by students for the first two weeks of school.

Parent transport students also have a name lanyard as well as a parent pick up tag for their backpacks available and ready.

If you are able to pick up this information from school, tomorrow, Friday, September 4th, staff will be available to assist you any time between 8:00 am-5:30 pm. If you are not available to come tomorrow, we will provide an alternate distribution prior to your child’s first in person day.

  • School Entrance Physicals

School entrance physicals and immunization requirements for admission to school remain unchanged for the 2020-2021 school year. Please pay attention to the important information below to ensure that your child has met the requirements prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

The Code of Virginia requires that children receive a comprehensive physical examination (§ 22.1-270) within 12 months prior to the start of school and be adequately immunized (§ 22.1-271.2) before entering public kindergarten or elementary school. Other required immunizations include Human Papillomavirus (HPV) for girls entering sixth grade; and a Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (Tdap) booster for entry into seventh grade.

Additional resources are available for families of uninsured and underinsured children or those impacted financially by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    • The VDH, Vaccines for Children (VFC) map indicates participating providers for immunizations by region. Parents may contact local clinics directly for information and hours of service.
    • The Virginia Community Healthcare Association works with a statewide network of clinics that bill for public and some private insurance. Many clinics provide a sliding scale for those without insurance and offer free immunizations in partnership with the VDH.
    • The Virginia Association of Free Clinics are independent, nonprofit, volunteer-driven and community-based organizations. Each clinic sets its own eligibility requirements and guidelines, and all must be contacted directly for assistance.

  • School Calendar Update

The school calendar for next school year (2020-2021) will include a post-Labor Day start to school so the calendar will be very similar to the current school year calendar. The 20-21 calendar will be brought to the School Board to approve this winter. School division staff will continue to work with representatives from all of the school divisions who send students to the New Horizons Regional Education Center (NHREC) to determine if a change to a pre-Labor Day school start should occur for the 2021-2022 school year. The results of the school divisions surveys are being used to inform the decision making process.  PCPS had a good return rate on the survey that was provided to the school community.  The results of the survey can be found online at this link  https://www.poquoson.k12.va.us/Page/248. A decision about the 2021-2022 calendar will be made during the spring of this school year.
