Beginning next week, a group of teachers will meet with the Poquoson Middle School Modernization Project architects to provide suggestions for possible design work for the middle school renovation.  Poquoson Middle School committee members represent all three grade levels, and include core and elective teachers, an ITRT, and a special education teacher.

Additionally, during the input process next week, other faculty and staff members will also be interviewed to provide insights and feedback to the architects. These interviews will include teachers from a variety of content areas, other staff members, students, and the athletic director (AD) from the high school.  The AD is important to this process because some of the design work may support high school athletic competitions held on the PMS Field.

Opportunities for community input will be publicized in the coming weeks. Until that time, we encourage the community to use Let’s Talk to submit comments or questions. All input to Let’s Talk will be reviewed by division staff and shared with the design team.

At a special February 13 meeting of the Poquoson City School Board, Waller, Todd & Sadler Architects was awarded the Architectural & Engineering contract for the Poquoson Middle School Modernization Project. The awarded amount is $1,293,371.

PCPS received five responses to the Request for Proposals issued on September 18, 2018. Three firms were interviewed, and Waller, Todd & Sadler was determined to be the most fully qualified firm by the RFP Selection Committee.

Determining educational specifications and design requirements are the next steps in the estimated $17 million project. Waller, Todd & Sadler will meet with the project steering committee and the project design committee and will coordinate with division staff to provide opportunities for community input.

The project is set to be completed by June 2022.

  • Built in 1932, Poquoson Middle School has undergone 11 construction projects, including an addition in 1994. This fall, Poquoson City Public Schools will take the first step on a $17 million, multi-year modernization project for the school by requesting proposals for the services of an architectural and design firm.

As part of the design process, PCPS will ask members of our community for their input on the project. And, throughout the entire project, this site will serve as the hub for information about each phase -- from start to finish. We encourage you to visit often, and follow us on Twitter for regular updates, photos and videos.
