• Reading

During our literacy block, fourth graders will read in small groups and independently each day. In fourth grade there is an increased emphasis on informational text. Students are asked not only to decode and comprehend, but also to analyze and respond to text including personal reflections and opinions.

Skills and strategies fourth graders will work on:

    • Determine theme or main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details
    • Apply syllabication patterns and morphology (roots and affixes) to read multisyllabic words accurately
    • Scan and locate specific information in text
    • Skim materials to develop a general overview of content
    • Describe characters and character motivation in depth, including intrinsic and extrinsic traits
    • Explain events and ideas in historical, scientific or technical text including what happened and why
    • Explain the major difference between poems, dram and prose and refer to structural elements of poems
    • Use informational text features to organize information
    • Describe the development of plot including the central conflict, action and resolution
    • Consider various points of view in text
    • Compare and contrast information from two texts on the same topic
    • Compare and contrast various accounts of the same event
    • Make comments that contribute to a discussion and link statements to remarks of others
    • Use context clues to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding of vocabulary
