Homeless Information and Resources
Children and youth who lose their homes do not also have to lose their connection to the school. They are covered by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Keeping homeless children and youth connected to school provides them with a source of stability and normalcy while supporting academic achievement and mental and emotional security.
If your family lives in any of the following situations then your preschool-aged and school-aged children have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act:
- In a shelter, motel, hotel, or campground
- On the street, in an abandoned building, trailer or car, or other inadequate accommodation
- Doubled up with friends or relatives because you cannot find or afford housing
- In the above conditions and is a migratory child or youth
