Homeless Information and Resources

Children and youth who lose their homes do not also have to lose their connection to the school. They are covered by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Keeping homeless children and youth connected to school provides them with a source of stability and normalcy while supporting academic achievement and mental and emotional security.

If your family lives in any of the following situations then your preschool-aged and school-aged children have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act:

  • In a shelter, motel, hotel, or campground 
  • On the street, in an abandoned building, trailer or car, or other inadequate accommodation
  • Doubled up with friends or relatives because you cannot find or afford housing
  • In the above conditions and is a migratory child or youth
