Title I

Title I Services in Poquoson

Our Title I program serves students in grades 3-5 by supplementing and supporting the classroom reading instruction.   The primary goal of the program is to provide additional instruction for students’ specific needs in the areas of phonological awareness, word recognition, and language comprehension. Additionally, the Title I teacher identifies and diagnoses specific reading problems in students to formulate and implement plans that will improve students’ reading skills.  Specialized instruction is provided through research-based practices that are multi-sensory, systematic, explicit, and sequential.

Students are selected in grade three based on their Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS), Developmental Spelling Inventory (DSA), and Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) results. In grades four and five, students are selected based on their Virginia Standards of Learning scores (SOL), Developmental Spelling Inventory levels (DSA), Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) scores. Quarterly reading grades and assessments along with teacher recommendations are also considered.

Title I Parent Questions and Feedback Form

  • Parent Involvement is a vital part of Title I.  Parents are invited to give input and ask questions through our Parent Questions and Feedback Form.  You may also talk with your child’s school principal to ask questions about curriculum and instruction, learn ways to assist your child at home or set up a conference.
  • Attendance at the Parent Title I Meetings throughout the year is preferred.  Parents are invited throughout the school year to take part in the revision of the Title I Family & Parent Policy, provide needed input and learn methods that will support their child’s academic progress in the classroom and at home.
  • Math and Literacy school events take place during the school year.  These events are geared to involve families in their child’s education by showcasing engaging, hands-on strategies through games and fun activities.
