Admission Requirements
Student Registration Qualifications:
Listed below are the admission requirements for students enrolling in Poquoson City Public Schools.
- A person of school age (i.e., a person who will have reached his fifth birthday on or before September 30 of the school year.)
- A person who has not reached 20 years of age on or before August 1 of the school year.
- Reside in the Poquoson City Public Schools division or be eligible for admission under the Virginia Department of Education Guidelines.
Required Documentation:
Poquoson City Public Schools requires the following documentation in order to enroll your child, per the Virginia Department of Education.
Documents required to have for the final appointment:
- Certified original Birth Certificate for the student (copies are not permitted)
- Parent/Legal Guardian Driver's License, DMV Identification or Passport
- Any custody orders/paperwork
- Name, address, phone number, and FAX number of the last school attended
- Copy of last report card, if applicable
- Proof of residency, two or more of the following required:
- A resident is defined as one who resides permanently in the City of Poquoson. Proof of residence must include two (2) proofs of residence/address: a current lease agreement/mortgage statement and a current utility bill (electric, gas, water, sanitation dated within the last 30 days, showing the enrolling parent/legal guardian name. If the resident is presenting a Poquoson Residency Affidavit, it must be notarized. Final decisions regarding residence for school attendance purposes shall be made by the division superintendent or his/her designee.
- Any person who knowingly makes a false statement concerning the residency of a child in a particular school district or school attendance zone, for the purpose of (1) avoiding the tuition charges authorized by applicable law or (2) enrollment in a school outside the attendance zone in which the student resides, may be guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor and shall be liable to the School Board for tuition charges authorized by applicable law for the time the student was enrolled in Poquoson City Public Schools, pursuant to Virginia Code § 22.1-264.1.
- Physical Examination: State law requires that your child receives a physical examination before entering kindergarten or elementary school. (Only applies to Kindergarten through Grade-5)
- Immunization Record: Documentation indicating that the child has received the required immunizations must be provided. Please review the School and Day Care Minimum Immunization Requirements (PDF) (available from the Virginia Department of Health) for a list of the required immunizations.
Expulsion Statement: When a student is registered, the parent must provide a sworn statement about whether the child has been expelled from attending a private school or another public school in Virginia or a school in another state for an offense involving weapons, alcohol or drugs, or for willful infliction of injury to another person. In addition, the parent must provide a sworn statement or affirmation indicating whether the student has been found guilty of or adjudicated delinquent for any offense listed in subsection G of § 16.1-260 or any substantially similar offense under the laws of any state, the District of Columbia, or the United States or its territories.

New Student Registration
Registration Steps (Kindergarten-Grade 12)
Please follow the steps below to enroll your child in Poquoson City Public Schools.
1. Admission Policy: All students must meet the age and residence requirements defined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
2. Complete the Registration Form: Poquoson City Public Schools will be using an online registration form to collect information and enroll your child. Please select the link below to fill out the online registration form.

*Once you fill out and submit this form you must contact the school to make any adjustments.
3. Present Required Documentation: Poquoson City Public Schools and the Commonwealth of Virginia require you to provide documentation in order to enroll your child. Please call the school for which you are registering your child to make an appointment in order to complete the registration process.

Kindergarten Registration
Registration begins by completing the online registration form. Parents will need to call the Primary School Office (757-868-4403) to schedule an appointment to have documentation verified. Please note that the health form does not need to be filled out on the night of registration. It needs to be completed prior to the student beginning school. Our school nurse will be available to answer questions and look over completed health forms.

1. Determine Your Eligibility for Enrollment: In order to enroll as a Kindergarten student for the 2024-2025 school year, your child must be 5 years old by September 30, 2024 and reside in Poquoson. (Registration begins February 5, 2024)
2. Complete the Registration Form: Poquoson City Schools will be using an online registration form to collect information for enrollment. Please select the link below to fill out the online registration form.

3. Present the Required Documentation: In order to enroll a child in a public school system in Virginia, state law requires a parent or guardian of a child to provide certain information to the child's school division.

Returning Student Verification & Updating Info
Returning Student Verification Steps
At the beginning of each school year parents and guardians are asked to update their registration information. This process is important to ensure that Poquoson City Public Schools has the most current contact information for your student. Parents and guardians will complete this process using an online form that has been pre-filled using the data from our student information system. You are encouraged to review this information and make any necessary changes or updates.
Poquoson City Public Schools will be using the PowerSchool/Parent Portal student information system to complete the returning student registration verification process.
Please use the following steps to begin the registration verification process:
- Sign into Parent Portal
- Select the Returning Student Registration for each child attending Poquoson City Public Schools
- Once you have submitted your Returning Student Registration, you must contact the school to make any adjustments.

Once your child has enrolled in PCPS and you have filled out the online registration form any changes to the student's information can be handled using the following options:
To Update Information:
- For Pre-Registered Students, who have not started attending school, please contact your child's school directly to request any changes to their information that was submitted during registration. This includes students who have been registered to attend school in the upcoming school year.
- After the Returning Student Verification process has closed for the current school year, parents and guardians can change basic contact information, emergency contact information, electronic notification contact information, bus supervision information, and regular dismissal plan information by contacting the school.
- If there is information that requires verification of the school, please call your child's school and make an appointment to bring that information in for verification/approval. Items that require verification are:
- Student Name Change
- Change of Address
- Change in Custody (if applicable)
- New Affidavit of Legal Residency (if applicable)
