Poquoson City Public Schools engaged in a division-wide STEM Day and Night events on Thursday November 15, 2018. Students from Kindergarten through 12th grade were involved in STEM activities, assemblies, guest speakers, mobile exhibits and more. The primary and elementary schools participated in a science assembly put on by Mad Science of Hampton Roads. During non-assembly times, the students in the elementary school engaged in various STEM challenges. Some middle school students were able to experience assemblies from NASA, while some technology classes were given a speech by a representative from Virginia Air and Space Center. At the high school, Economics and Personal Finance students were engaged in a game put on by Finance Educators from Bayport Credit Union, some Mathematics classes toured the Newport News Shipbuilding mobile exhibit to see how STEM is used every day, and a NASA retiree spoke to Astronomy classes.
During STEM Night an estimated 300-400 parents, students and other community members came to the primary school to see STEM in action. Teachers and students from K-12 showcased STEM activities they have done in school, while Mad Science of Hampton Roads and a community volunteer provided activity booths for younger students. Particularly popular during the event were the middle school teachers and students providing opportunities for coding, programming and flight simulation.
