Network Sort

Network Sort

Second grade classes worked with Kelly Purdie, an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at Poquoson Primary School, on an “unplugged” computer science activity called a Network Sort. This activity not only worked with students on current computer science standards, but also directly tied to the second grade math standards they are focusing on in the classroom.

By walking along the network path, students compared numbers using an algorithm which ordered numbers from least to greatest (up to 999). The students worked collaboratively, helping one another debug/fix any mistakes to ensure they got the correct number order at the end of the sort.  This activity allowed students to be active, and also gave them the opportunity to teach each other and Mrs. Archer, the PPS Librarian, about algorithms, debugging, and how to move through the board in order to sort the numbers correctly.
